How to Sharpen a Karambit Curved Blade

The Karambit is a very unique blade style that offers its own benefits in the many uses it has. I often get asked how to sharpen a karambit blade with the VieprSharp knife sharpener. The hooked blade is a great one for cutting open boxes easily and can offer many other tactical advantages. It is however, a challenging blade to sharpen for many because of the curve to the blade. There is a question of what type of stone to use and how to use it effectively. The thought is primarily that the rounded style of the blade edge does not allow for a flat stone to make contact. The other option is to use a half round stone. Unfortunately, that would not make much contact either so what do you do?

I did a video to show how to sharpen a Karambit as well. It really isn’t that hard as long as you throw out some of your premises. The first is to get rid of the premise that your stone must make complete contact with the blade at all times in order to sharpen it. This simply isn’t true. The edges of the stone will work quite well if you are using a good stone like those offered with the ViperSharp.
